Bellarmine University is committed to providing secure, reliable network and internet services to support its academic, administrative, and operational activities. This Network and Internet Usage Policy governs the use of the university’s wired and wireless network, Internet access circuits, Virtual Private Network (VPN), and guest access. Compliance with this policy ensures the integrity, security, and efficiency of the university's technology resources and protects users from unauthorized access or misuse.
Scope
This policy applies to:
- All students, faculty, staff, and any authorized individual accessing Bellarmine's network infrastructure.
- Individuals utilizing Bellarmine's Internet and VPN services.
- Guests utilizing the university's network and Internet.
Policy Guidelines
Wired and Wireless Network Usage
- Users must authenticate through their assigned credentials to access Bellarmine's secure wireless networks.
- Network access is granted solely for academic and university business-related purposes.
- Users are prohibited from accessing unauthorized areas of the network, performing network scans, or attempting to disrupt network services.
- Installation of any personal network equipment, such as routers, network switches, or access points, is strictly prohibited without prior approval from the IT Infrastructure team.
Internet Access Circuits
- Bellarmine’s dedicated Internet access circuits must be used responsibly and in alignment with university policies and applicable laws.
- Access to websites or services that promote illegal activities or content deemed inappropriate by the university is strictly prohibited.
- Bandwidth-intensive activities, such as media streaming, must be conducted within reasonable limits to maintain network performance for all users.
Guest Access
- Guest access to the university's network is provided via the Bellarmine Open wireless network.
- Guests must agree to abide by the university’s network usage policies and refrain from engaging in activities that compromise network security or violate institutional standards.
- Guests may receive temporary credentials to use public computers within the library. These credentials must be obtained from the circulation desk.
Compliance and Enforcement
Users are expected to adhere to this policy at all times. Violations may result in:
- Suspension or termination of network and internet access privileges.
- Disciplinary action as outlined in the university’s Student Code of Conduct or Employee Handbook as appropriate.
- Legal consequences for activities violating local, state, or federal laws.
The university regularly reviews and updates this policy to align with emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and institutional requirements. Users are encouraged to stay informed of any revisions through official communications.
Monitoring and Privacy
Bellarmine reserves the right to monitor network activity to ensure compliance with this policy and to maintain the security of its systems. While the university respects user privacy, network activity may be logged and reviewed if necessary to address security incidents or policy violations.
